Simply Print

Over the past three years, we as Simply Print, have learned and experienced a lot. You don’t get a handy-dandy guidebook when you start your own small business, so we were taught by trial and error, especially so in those first two years. Last year, it seemed like we finally hit our stride, and even though one of us moved away, we made it work because we had to, Simply Print is our baby.

We locked down on some amazing clients that relied on our constant work ethic. With that influx of steady work (and steady paychecks) we kind of lost sight of why we started Simply Print for ourselves. We originally longed for the flexibility to create things we wanted to create along with client work. But instead we found ourselves putting the work that pays the bills ahead of our creative endeavors. We were lead to believe that working constantly meant that we made it, that we accomplished a goal for a small business. We worked odd hours (early mornings, late into the nights) and even on weekends and holidays.

We admit that at first, it did feel really good to be working all the time but from springtime to beginning of winter, we were “on call” for work. Hence why you heard from us very sparingly, we were hustling and bustling. During the holiday break we were able to rest and reflect on our best year yet. However, being burnt out from all that work, we came to conclusion that we lost that creativity and inspiration we once had an abundance of in the beginning.

So we made a unanimous decision to MAKE time for creativity in 2019, to have those creative juices flow in our bodies again. It may be hard when it’s crunch time, or when there are a lot of projects to juggle at once, but to look forward to working towards our own endeavors will make it worth it. Without sounding too “New Years Resolution”-y, this year we want to put ourselves out more. Not only because we don’t want you thinking we fell off the face of the Earth, but to hold ourselves accountable for our own happiness, our own definition of success. We got a lot going on planned for 2019, so thank you for sticking with us during our “year of online absence.” We’re excited to share what’s going on in the coming months!

♥,
Megan & Tammy

Sorry to leave you hanging for so long, but I think it was worth the wait. If you're confused as to what I'm talking about, please visit the first post regarding the process of creating these invites. Side thought: how is it already two months into the new year? Well, it is, and I have returned with the full reveal of these bright, fun-fun-fun AF wedding invitations.

Let's just get into Part Two, shall we? Neha (the bride, now a wifey) and Randy picked the third option because it featured the illustration the best, and the colors were exactly what she had planned for the entire wedding scheme. This design does a great job of conveying that an exciting, colorful celebration is in store soon. Keep on scrolling down to oogle at the details, and you can even view more shots over on our Portfolio under Featured Works.

If you're interested in having Simply Print design your wedding invites, send us an email (hello@simplyprintla.com)!

Our pricing is VERY competitive and we can work with most budgets!

I thought I would be clever and use Neha and Randy's wedding hashtag as the title for today's entry. You likey?* This couple consists of the two coolest kids you'll ever meet, and they just got married in Napa last month, so I figured it was time to share the hip-hippest custom invitations I've ever designed. The catch is: I'm splitting the reveal into two posts (kind of like how this last season of Game of Thrones is split into two half-seasons). The reason being, I wanted to go over a little bit of the process, and since these were an absolute joy to create, I really could talk about these all day long (I won't, don't worry).

To kick things off, Neha and I had a phone meeting where she just spilled her ideas of what she wanted the invitations to look like, what her color scheme for the whole wedding was, and a rough timeline of when she'd need the invitation suite by. Based on what she told me over the phone, I researched and put together my inspiration for her wedding stationery look. I wanted to incorporate vibrant colors, geometric shapes/patterns, mid-century trends, and illustrations (similar to Sanjay Patel, per her request). But I also kept in mind to not fall into the generic Indian motifs of elephants, paisley, peacock, etc (and boy there was a lot of that when I surfed the Internet). Basically, I wanted to keep it modern and hip and colorful. So I sent her the above mood board and few examples of other wedding invites to get her feedback on typography and layout.

From there, she told me what parts she would love to see incorporated into the design (she was more drawn to simple shapes and lines) and I went on from there. I illustrated a "Bride Neha" and "Groom Randy" after not having made vectors from scratch in quite some time. I think it took me more than half an hour to do her one eye ball, which was what I started with, but after getting that eye done, it was a breeze to get the illustration style perfect. For the supporting design elements, Neha favored star bursts, so I used a few variations throughout the final invitation.

I chose non-serif fonts to continue with the clean, modern look. The layout flows very well, and I suggested to Neha that if the text is minimal, I would be able to achieve the maximum modern style. For the first round, I sent her three designs, the third one was what she landed on (and I promise will be revealed in a future post). Although the creations above did not make the final cut, I did recycle their elements into an insert she wanted mailed with the invite. I also made a matching RSVP card that completes the invitation suite. Read Part 2 --- here!

*I didn't want to bombard you with the meaning behind their wedding hashtag, #ramram2017, in case you really didn't care for it. For those of you who are interested, here it is: both Neha's and Randy's last names end with the same three letters --- r, a, m. Also, "Ram Ram" is an Indian greeting!

Happy Friday everyone! Did you know that July is National Ice Cream month? Much more importantly, did you know that today marks our 2-year anniversary? I'm totally celebrating by eating some ice cream (more specifically, Wanderlust Creamery's Ube Malted Crunch) since I'm back in Los Angeles, dudes! But only for this weekend because today, Lady Boss, Megan, will be attending San Diego Comic Con with her neon green Bob's Burgers backpack in tow, and we still have a business to run. If you want to spot her on Friday, she'll be rocking a pink unicorn skater dress with her Star Wars Planet Hoth Vans, and on Saturday she'll be sporting her Team Buffy (the Vampire Slayer) tank. I wish we could celebrate this milestone together, but we'll both be observing today by doing things we love, (I love eating ice cream and Megan loves seeing MBMBaM live). It's been a crazy good couple of months as we acquire more amazing clients and learn how to work apart from each other, but we both wouldn't trade it for any other job out there!

More than a year ago, I shared my moodboard for Eloquent Woman, a fashion magazine who reached out to me in need of a masthead/logotype. Last July, I designed a few spreads of their debut issue featuring the masthead I created, (you may view it on our "Featured Work" page, here) and since then they have revamped their brand to Éloquent Magazine and I was lucky to designed even more spreads for their most recent issue. This time, you can actually purchase the hard copy version off of their Blurb page. I'm sharing a few spreads that I enjoyed working on (I uploaded a few more on our website), but you should definitely order a copy if you're interested in reading the articles!
